RED BANK: REGION SPARED BY STORM

Though other areas of New Jersey suffered disastrous flooding, the Greater Red Bank Green was spared as Hurricane Ida swept across the state Wednesday.

At 7:30 a.m. Thursday, power utility JCP&L’s outage map showed 90 customers in the area of Silverbrook Road in Shrewsbury without electricity; a handful in Fair Haven; and none in Red Bank.

Police in Red Bank and Fair Haven said they had no damage reports. redbankgreen took a quick drive through Red Bank, Fair Haven and Little Silver and saw no sign of flooding or wind damage.

RED BANK: OPPRESSIVE HEAT SETTLES IN

Oppressive heat and humidity will combine to make it feel like 103 degrees in the region that includes the Greater Red Bank Green starting Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. 

The so-called heat index, a blend of air temperature and humidity, will rise several degrees Thursday, with conditions worst in the afternoon and “little relief at night,” the agency’s Mount Holly office said on Twitter early Wednesday. An excessive heat warning for western Monmouth County has now been extended to Friday night.

RED BANK: AUGUST BEGINS ON COOL SIDE

With temperatures in the mid-70s, the pier in Red Bank’s Marine Park drew a small crowd for fishing and clamming Saturday afternoon.

The first workday of August, 2021 gets underway Monday with   more cool weather and lots of sunshine Monday morning before temperatures rise to a high of 81 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

RED BANK: STORMS TO CLEAR WILDFIRE HAZE

Devastating wildfires in Oregon have cast a blanket of haze that’s impacting even the Greater Red Bank Green, as seen in Tuesday’s unusual sunrise over the Navesink River in Red Bank, above, and sunset viewed from the GooseNeck Bridge over the Shrewsbury, at right.

The haze is expected to linger until about noon Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. “Severe” evening thunderstorms, which may bring damaging wind gusts and large hail, will help further rid the atmosphere of smoke, the agency reported early Wednesday.

RED BANK: WEEKEND FORECAST MIXED

Heading into the mid-summer weekend, the Greater Red Bank Green is looking at a mix of weather conditions. Heat and humidity will make it feel like 102 degrees Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Heavy rain may follow a sunshiney day Saturday; Sunday is shaping up as mostly cloudy with rain possible in the afternoon.

RED BANK: STORM KNOCKS HUNDREDS OFFLINE

JCP&L reported 303 Red Bank homes and businesses remained without electrical service Friday morning following a storm Thursday afternoon.

According to police Chief Darren McConnell, winds from Tropical Storm Elsa took down trees on on Leighton Avenue (above) and River, Tilton, Catherine, High and McClaren streets, bringing down power lines. Several landed on homes, but none caused severe damage, he said.

As of 6:30 a.m. Friday, JCP&L estimated all customers in the borough to be back online by 8:30, according to its outage map.

FAIR HAVEN: STORM TO SOAK GREATER GREEN

It was smooth sailing in sultry weather for junior sailers in the Fair Haven-based River Rats program Thursday morning. But Tropical Storm Elsa threatened to keep the vessels docked Friday. 

In a statement, the National Weather Service warned of heavy rainfall resulting in flash flooding and tropical storm-force winds, especially near the coast. Two to four inches of rainfall are expected Thursday afternoon into Friday morning, with locally higher amounts possible.

RED BANK: ‘FEELS LIKE’ TEMPS TO TOP 100

High temperatures and humidity will push feels-like temperatures above 100 degrees Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. 

With ample sunshine expected, the heat index value for the region that includes the Greater Red Bank Green could top out as high as 104 Monday, the NWS forecasts. Thunderstorms may arrive in late afternoon.

RED BANK: HEAT ADVISORY ISSUED

hot topicUPDATE: On Monday, the borough announced a postponement of the work described below to Thursday and Friday, weather permitting.

 Outdoor work, like the scheduled milling of Hudson Avenue in Red Bank, may be extra uncomfortable this week.

With temperatures and humidity levels high, he National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for seven New Jersey counties, including western Monmouth, from noon Monday through 8 p.m. Wednesday.

LITTLE SILVER: T-STORMS FILL FORECAST

RED BANK: DAMAGING WINDS IN FORECAST

Potentially damaging winds are expected to buffet the Greater Red Bank Green beginning Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service expects maximum gusts of close to 50 miles per hour between 2 p.m. and 4 a.m. Saturday.

“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” the NWS said in a warning issued early Friday. “Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.”

RED BANK: SLIPPERY CONDITIONS PERSIST

The fourth snowfall of February left eight or more inches of fluffy crystal on the Greater Red Bank Green Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The “snow event” still wasn’t quite over early Friday, as a cold mist added to a layer of ice on roadways, as seen on Madison Avenue in Red Bank, above.

Freezing drizzle was expected to continue into mid-morning, with periods of light snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain persisting into the early afternoon, according to the NWS forecast. All that could mean another inch or so to shovel and salt.

RED BANK: MORE SNOW ON THE WAY

The Greater Red Bank Green is bracing for its fourth snowfall of February Thursday. 

Expect a cold but dry day Wednesday, with the storm, named Viola, beginning in earnest after daybreak Thursday. It could drop 3 to 5 inches during the day, according to the National Weather Service. A mix of sleet and snow in the evening may leave another inch or two, with a layer of ice on the ground.
