It’s a seasonal tradition that’s been going on for a quarter of a century — and on the afternoon of Sunday, October 9, the Visiting Nurses of NJ/ VNA Health Group marks the silver anniversary of its annual Halloween Fest fundraiser with a return to Scothigh Farm, the traditional host venue at 142 Bingham Avenue in Rumson.

Reservations close next Wednesday, October 5 for the “Costumes Welcome” event, which is presented by VNAHG Children’s Auxiliary — and which boasts a gamut of activities that include pumpkin picking, a petting zoo, pony rides, clowns, live music, arts and crafts, magic show, and Spooky Maze, plus food and refreshments and more.

Two weeks ago, the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank announced a concert event featuring Bobby Bandiera’s Jersey Shore Rock n’ Soul Revue, and its tribute to an artist who’s long loomed as a genuine inspiration for the veteran Shore scene singer and guitarist: Roy Orbison.

And then, the world lost David Bowie.

RED BANK: VNA LIGHTS THE HOSPICE TREE

In the words of the Red Bank-based VNA Health Group, it’s an annual “evening of reflection, music and celebration to honor the memories of those we love” — an opportunity to support the Red Bank-based organization — and remember a special someone — by illuminating a light on a very special holiday-season tree.

This Monday evening, November 16, the Hospice Tree of Lights will come to light once more, during a 5:30 pm ceremony outside the Judith Stanley Coleman Building (176 Riverside Avenue/ Route 35; enter parking lot on Bodman Place) — the local headquarters of the nonprofit founded as Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey.

Coordinators of the Asbury Park-based drop-in center Project REAL (Real Empowerment on All Levels) recently visited Red Bank Regional High School to acquaint students with the safe and social space for LGBTQ youth and their allies. On World AIDS Day, Eric Wurthrick and Tank Teachworth met with students of the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) and encouraged them to spread the mission of the facility to their classmates and other friends.

“AIDS is not always associated with high school students, but 13 to 24 year old males represent the fastest rising HIV infected population. So that is why Project REAL was founded,” the gentlemen told the GSA club members who meet at RBR’s SOURCE Program. The SOURCE is RBR’s School Based Youth Services Program, and another safe place for high school students to meet during and directly after the school day.

RED BANK: RSVP FOR CHEMO GIRLS BRUNCH

From the office of State Senator Jennifer Beck comes a reminder that tomorrow, October 17 is the deadline to register for the annual “Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls Brunch,” an event designed to offer solace, comfort, camaraderie and advice to women with cancer.

Scheduled for the morning of Wednesday, October 22 at VNA Health Group (176 Riverside Avenue/ Route 35 at Bodman Place), the brunch takes its name and its theme from Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls, a book co-authored by Red Bank resident Marybeth Maida — a mom, a media professional, and an active, dynamic, even innovative cancer survivor.

In 2009, Maida joined forces with her good friend and cosmetics industry insider Debbie Kiederer to compose the world’s first guide to makeup, wigs, skin care, nutrition and spiritual wellbeing aimed at women who are undergoing chemotherapy. Marybeth will be the featured speaker at the event that runs from 10 am to noon, with complimentary copies of the book available to brunch attendees.
