RED BANK: STORM KNOCKS HUNDREDS OFFLINE

JCP&L reported 303 Red Bank homes and businesses remained without electrical service Friday morning following a storm Thursday afternoon.

According to police Chief Darren McConnell, winds from Tropical Storm Elsa took down trees on on Leighton Avenue (above) and River, Tilton, Catherine, High and McClaren streets, bringing down power lines. Several landed on homes, but none caused severe damage, he said.

As of 6:30 a.m. Friday, JCP&L estimated all customers in the borough to be back online by 8:30, according to its outage map.

FAIR HAVEN: STORM TO SOAK GREATER GREEN

It was smooth sailing in sultry weather for junior sailers in the Fair Haven-based River Rats program Thursday morning. But Tropical Storm Elsa threatened to keep the vessels docked Friday.

In a statement, the National Weather Service warned of heavy rainfall resulting in flash flooding and tropical storm-force winds, especially near the coast. Two to four inches of rainfall are expected Thursday afternoon into Friday morning, with locally higher amounts possible.

RED BANK: POWER BACK ON AS HEAT DIALS UP

Six days after Tropical Storm Isaias, electrical service was almost fully restored on the Greater Green early Monday, just in time for some uncomfortably hot weather.

As of 6 a.m., 11 homes and businesses in Fair Haven were awaiting restoration of power from First Energy/JCP&L, down from more than 2,300 at the peak, according to the utility’s outage map. Fewer than 5 each in Red Bank and Little Silver were still without service, the map indicated.

Ambient temperatures and humidity will combine to create feels-like peaks to nearly 100 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. The extended forecast for the Greater Green is below.

RED BANK: POWER OUTAGES CONTINUE

The effects of Tropical Storm Isaias continued to disrupt life on the Greater Green early Friday, three days after it passed through the region.

As of 6 a.m., 80,411 homes and businesses in Monmouth County did not have electrical service from First Energy/JCP&L, or more than one in four customers, according to the utility’s outage map, shown above.

ON THE GREEN: OUTAGES & ABUNDANT SUN

An unidentified runner on River Road in Fair Haven soldiered through a downpour during Tropical Storm Isais Tuesday.

The storm left hundreds of customers on the Greater Red Bank Green without power, a condition that continued Wednesday morning. Utility provider JCP&L’s online outage map reported 52 percent of its 291,000 customers in Monmouth County still without electricity as of 6 a.m.

The weather outlook for Wednesday is sunny, with a high of about 87 degrees. Check out the extended forecast by the National Weather Service below.

ON THE GREEN: OUTAGES FOLLOW STORM

Tropical Storm Isais brought down a tree and electrical wires onto a house on Mechanic Street in Red Bank Tuesday. No one was injured, police said.

The storm swept through the Greater Red Bank Green by mid-afternoon, leaving behind numerous power outages, lots of leafy debris – and bright sunshine.

RED BANK: ISAIAS MAY SPARE AREA ITS WORST

With about a quarter-inch of rain falling, the Greater Red Bank Green saw only a hint of Tropical Storm Isaias Monday night, according to the National Weather Service. Few JCP&L customers were without power Tuesday morning.

The region may be further spared the drenching worst of the storm Tuesday, according to NWS forecasts, though dangerous winds are still expected.

RED BANK: TROPICAL STORM WARNING ISSUED

Tropical Storm Isaias could bring heavy rain and dangerous winds to the Greater Red Bank Green Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Tracking north along the Atlantic coast early Monday, the storm was expected to bring flash flooding, rip currents and possible wind gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour, the agency said in a tropical storm warning update early Monday.

SEA BRIGHT: BRACING FOR HERMINE

The forecasted impacts in terms of both rainfall and tides from Tropical Storm Hermine have been reduced as the storm moved farther east into the Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center announced Sunday morning. Still, “moderate” but widespread coastal flooding is expected with the Sunday night and Monday morning high tides.

In Sea Bright, borough workers were busy removing lockers and completing a berm of sand on the municipal beach Sunday morning.

Elsewhere, Jersey Central Power & Light said it has more than 2,400 linemen, forestry workers and other support personnel standing by should high winds and flooding interrupt service to its central and northern New Jersey customers . (Click to enlarge.)

A category-one hurricane named Hermine was downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall in Florida early Friday, and is now expected to travel northeast along the Eastern Seaboard according to the National Weather Service.

But with “quite a bit of uncertainty” in the storm’s track afterward, the impact on the Greater Red Bank Green’s Labor Day weekend is unclear.

Road damage from Tropical Storm Irene five weeks ago has prompted organizers to pull the plug on this Saturday’s Red Bank Triathlon, redbankgreen has learned.

The problem is Hubbard Avenue, which was undermined when Shadow Lake overtopped its banks and is still in the process of being repaired, says race organizer Doug Rice.

PATIENCE & GROANS AS OUTAGES PERSIST

Electrical power was restored at Fair Haven Mayor Mike Halfacre’s home late Monday night, about 12 hours after he bought a mobile generator.

But he’s still still in the dark about when the lights will be on in the parts of his town that still don’t have power, he said.

Progress that had been made over the last two years in repairing strained relations between the town and First Energy subsidiary Jersey Central Power & Light “seems to have been completely undone,” as the utility company has failed to keep officials informed about efforts to restore power in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene, Halfacre said.

“I have found it incredibly frustrating dealing with JCP&L,” Halfacre tells redbankgreen. “There’s been a complete lack of substantive information.”

A ‘LITTLE KISS,’ THEN GOODNIGHT, IRENE

Braced for the worst, and recalling the devastation caused by the northeaster of 1992, the borough of Sea Bright evacuated all residents in advance of the arrival of Hurricane Irene Saturday. Even emergency personnel were ready to relocate to Rumson if things got as bad as forecast.

But less than 24 hours after what was supposed to have been the peak of a horrific storm, residents and business owners on the narrow spit of sand had one word to describe what they experienced when Irene, by then downgraded to a tropical storm, blew through: “lucky.”

SINGER SEBASTIAN BACH’S HOME DESTROYED

Heavy metal singer Sebastian Bach‘s Middletown home was destroyed when the Swimming River Reservoir overflowed its banks Sunday, he writes on his Facebook page.

A “numb, in shock & devastated” Bach reports that the house, once featured on MTV’s ‘Cribs,’ has been ‘destroyed, condemned and deemed uninhabitable,’ and that cherished mementos were lost in the onrush of reservoir water.

“Somewhere under this river is a Kiss pinball machine and 2 gargoyles from the Dynasty tour,” he writes beneath the photo at left. “If you see them floating past your house, they’re mine. Or at least they were. :(”

RED BANK: JUST A BIT DAMP AT THE EDGES

Red Bank borough administrator and fire marshal Stanley Sickels, interviewed by redbankgreen in Marine Park Sunday morning, says the town escaped the wrath of Hurricane Irene.

That truck in the video is one that was donated to the town by the City of Long Branch last Thursday.
