RUMSON STUDENTS HELP PLAN SCHOOL’S I-LAB

The Innovation Lab at Forrestdale School has completed Phase 1 of its design and construction. Part of a collaborative effort between administration and teachers, the first phase was made possible through a generous donation from the Rumson Education Foundation.

Currently the home of the technology/STEM classroom, which all Forrestdale students are enrolled in, the lab includes a student activity learning area that could be configured in countless possible arrangements in order to meet the needs of the students’ technology and STEM-based activities, as well as a state-of-the-art, touch-screen teacher and student display, and other technologies.

Jayshawn Banks, an eighth grade student at Red Bank Middle School, peeks above the top of his laptop — just enough time to compare the sailboat blueprint he’s developing on his screen with the real dinghy that is being assembled just a few feet away.

Jayshawn’s classmate, Shelly Vasquez, a seventh grader at Red Bank Charter School, does the same. Both are intent on the task at hand: to build a sailboat. And while both students know they can get quick answers from their teachers in the room, they remain steadfastly independent, choosing to work with their peers instead.

“We feel like architects,” Jayshawn said. “And when we run into problems, we know we can ask the teacher, but we’d rather figure it out ourselves.”

This balance of independence and collaboration is a hallmark of the five-week RBCS Summer Institute, available to all elementary school-aged children.

RED BANK CHARTER OFFERS SUMMER PROGRAM

RBCS painting on beachResearch has shown that summer months create a lapse in learning, and family socioeconomic status (SES) is highly correlated to the level of academic growth or decline over the summer. Two-thirds of the academic achievement gap in reading and language found among high school students has been explained through the learning loss that occurs during the summer months of the primary school years.

With that in mind, Red Bank Charter School has announced a wrap-around STEM-based curriculum for their Summer Institute program. Offered from July 5 to August 5 and divided into two grade level-based groups (grades 1-4, grades 5-8), the summertime activities are available both to current RBCS students and to non-students.

RED BANK’S RAMIREZ A MODEL STUDENT

Jose RamirezRed Bank Regional senior Jose Ramirez recently took first place at the State Technology Student Association Competition, for his portfolio and project in Transportation Modeling.

For students like Jose Ramirez, assembling a “modeling portfolio” means something far different from photo-studio head shots and location couture shoots. Like his fellow entrants in the State Technology Student Association competition, the Red Bank Regional High School senior employs three-dimensional modelmaking to solve engineering design challenges — and during last month’s TSA event at the College of New Jersey, the Red Bank resident’s skills enabled him to achieve First Place for his portfolio and project in the category of Transportation Modeling.

A student in RBR’s Academy of Pre-Engineering, Jose attends TSA events as an extra-curricular club which enters competitions with other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students from around the country. Having taken top honors in the April event, Jose is now eligible to enter his project in the national competition which takes place in June in Nashville, TN.

LINCROFT: STEM PROGRAM FOR GIRLS AT BCC

Female engineering students and faculty will welcome local Girl Scouts to the Lincroft campus of Brookdale Community College on April 23, for an interactive program designed to interest girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.

The program, held for the third consecutive year, is sponsored by the Brookdale STEM Institute, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore. It will feature an informal engineering competition requiring the Girl Scouts to build a functioning “roller coaster” out of raw materials such as cardboard tubes and paper cups.

In an announcement this week, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County launched the Building Blocks program, an initiative designed to inspire kids’ curiosity in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and prepare young people for 21st century success.

Through this program — which was implemented in the Red Bank Unit of BGCM late last year, and is set to launch in the Asbury Park Unit this month — the Clubs will receive a customized STEM curriculum and twenty Samsung 4 10.1 tablets from supporting sponsor Samsung Electronics North America.

On September 18, Red Bank Charter School was invited to participate in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 45th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) in Washington D.C., the leading policy conference on issues impacting African Americans and the global black community.

The theme of this year’s ALC presentation is, “Pushing the Limits: The Future of Consumer Electronics and the Journey to Mars and Beyond.” Serving as Honorary Host was Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas, joined by Megan Smith, Chief Technology Officer of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, who provided remarks on the importance of the initiative. A panel of engineers and strategists for NASA also presented discussions on the future of space travel.

RBCS students and staff participated in the Science and Technology Braintrust Sessions; held a special meeting with Congresswoman Johnson that included a guided tour of our nation’s Capital, and sat in on a House Foreign Affairs Committee discussion of U.S.-China relations. The meeting featured talks led by Congressman Chris Smith, senior Committee member and representative from New Jersey’s Fourth Congressional District.

SUMMER OF STEM AT RED BANK CHARTER

Red Bank Charter School has announced the availability of a new comprehensive STEM-based curriculum for their Summer Institute over five weeks, from July 6 to August 7. Summer Institute registration is now being accepted for current RBCS students, as well as non-students from Red Bank and surrounding communities.

RBCS Summer Institute fuses concepts of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) into real-world summer-learning activities. Students will explore alternative energy sources in a “Ride Like The Wind” engineering workshop by building a prototype wind turbine. They’ll don life-jackets as “River Rangers” in a week-long tour of our local waterways in student-built canoes. They’ll also develop teamwork skills in a canoeing competition with peers, culminating in a technology-driven storytelling activity using graphics, music and video.

Younger students will seine the Navesink “Down By the Sea” as budding Marine biologists. They’ll also experience “Life on a Farm” and learn about the importance of sustainable organic farming, and how to harvest nutritional snacks.
