It’s eyes-on-the-sky time as four outdoor events dominate Red Bank’s dance card this weekend.

For two, it’s a matter of avoiding a second straight rainout Saturday, while the outlook is clearer, and sunnier, for two others slated for Sunday.

A forecast of rain has prompted reschedulings for two outdoor Red Bank festivals slated for the upcoming weekend.

The change means that – weather permitting – the town could have both a beer-and-spirits tasting event and a Hispanic Heritage Celebration running simultaneously the following Saturday.

RED BANK: STIFLING HEAT IN FORECAST

Visitors to the pier in Red Bank’s Marine Park fished, crabbed and sought out relief from stifling heat Monday afternoon.

The discomfort across the Greater Red Bank Green on Labor Day will continue Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. With “feels like” temperatures expected to reach 102 in parts of Monmouth County, the agency issued a heat advisory in effect from Tuesday morning until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

RED BANK: CANADA WILDFIRE SMOKE RETURNS

Smoke from forest fires raging in Canada affected the Greater Red Bank Green for the second time in a month, laying a haze over the Navesink River early Friday morning.

The smoke, which has traveled as far as Europe, is expected to be less intense than the local smothering of June 7, but air quality still “may approach or exceed unhealthy standards,” according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Combined with high temperatures, that could make for especially uncomfortable conditions outdoors.

RED BANK: YO, ELF, WHAT’S THE OUTLOOK?

Bringing his annual dose of Christmas merriment, the Saxum Elf kept watch over the intersection of Broad and Front streets in downtown Red Bank Thursday.

The elf, who moves around throughout the holiday season as part of a downtown scavenger hunt, might also keep an eye on the sky, with an outdoor Christmas show by the Wag slated for Saturday evening in Riverside Gardens Park.

RED BANK: WEEKEND WEATHER OUTLOOK

Seagulls kept cool on a sandbar in the Swimming River off Bellhaven Nature Area in Red Bank as ‘feels-like’ temperatures for humans topped 100 degrees earlier this week.

With the heat wave now broken, the Greater Red Bank Green is in for a weekend of sunshine and temperatures peaking at about 80 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

With sunshine and temperatures nearing 70 degrees, a passenger turned a pontoon’s deck into a dance floor as it motored the Navesink River past Riverside Gardens Park in Red Bank Wednesday afternoon.

The sunshine will continue Friday, but peak temperatures will return to the more seasonal high 40s, according to the National Weather Service.

Red Bank businesses will soon be able to proclaim their spaces as havens for individuals targeted in bias crimes.

Under a new program unveiled Wednesday by Monmouth County Acting Prosecutor Lori Linskey and local law enforcement officials, the borough will begin offering businesses and institutions decals that designate their workplaces as places of temporary refuge to anyone threatened with a hate crime.

RED BANK: HUNDREDS RALLY FOR WOMEN

About 1,000 women, men and children marched and rallied for women’s reproductive rights in downtown Red Bank Saturday.

In conjunction with hundreds of similar events nationwide, the Red Bank gathering, organized by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey and the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, focused on abortion rights as the Supreme Court begins a new term Monday with pivotal cases on the docket.

Chanting “Ruth sent us” and “my body, my choice,” participants marched from the train station to Broad Street and then gathered in Riverside Gardens Park, where speakers, including borough Councilwoman Kate Triggiano, called for the election of women’s rights supporters.

About 150 proponents of “choice” regarding COVID-19 vaccines and masks protested outside Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank early Monday afternoon.

The midday protest followed a rally in Riverside Gardens Park, where god, the U.S. Constitution and the Second Amendment were also invoked.

RED BANK: WEEKEND OUTLOOK ‘TRANQUIL’

No, that’s not a forecast map. It depicts snowfall totals from the three-day blizzard that ended 25 years ago today, in 1996. The northeaster is one of only two storms to be classified as “extreme” on the Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale,” a measure of intensity. Who remembers that whopper?

RED BANK: ‘CHRISTMAS STAR’ BRINGS WINTER

Minus their customary caroling, to minimize the spread of COVID-19, neighbors on South Street in Red Bank went ahead with their annual display of luminaria Friday night.

Monday at 5:02 a.m. marked the solstice, the passage from autumn into winter in the northern hemisphere. This year, by coincidence, December 21 is when the two largest planets in Earth’s solar system, Jupiter and Saturn, will appear to nearly merge in the night sky in a rare phenomenon called a ‘Christmas star,’ according to Astronomy magazine.
