RED BANK: CHILD PORN GETS MAN EIGHT YEARS

RED BANK: LOCAL STARS ON THE ‘WEST SIDE’

Christa Dalmazio of Middletown and Mason Kugelman of Rumson star as Maria and Tony in the Phoenix Productions staging of ‘West Side Story’ at the Count Basie Theatre.

It’s been a staple of the Phoenix Productions playbook for nearly 25 years, one of those crowd-pleasing Broadway perennials to which the Red Bank-based semipro stage company has made regular revisits.

Still, it’s been some 10 seasons since West Side Story has received a fully-fleshed Phoenix staging. And when the curtain goes up this Friday night at the Count Basie Theatre, it will reveal an old favorite that’s infused with new energy, courtesy of a youthful cast of newcomers highlighted by two residents of the Greater Red Bank green.

TINTON FALLS: RANNEY TEENS FOR CONGRESS

Students from Red Bank and Rumson were among four Ranney School upper schoolers who brought home recognitions — including two Best Delegate honors — at the annual Harvard Model Congress event, held February 23 and 24 in Boston, MA.

Luke Denver-Moore of Red Bank, Ranney Class of 2019, was recognized by his committee chair as the Best Delegate for his ability to guide his committee as they successfully passed a number of bills, including the Autonomous vehicular Ingenuity and Development Act, which he co-authored and pushed through both the House and Senate during the two-day event that provides select students with a working model of the federal legislation process.

TINTON FALLS: RANNEY NAMES NEW A.D.

Natalie (Cocchi) Gorman, a soccer standout and graduate of Red Bank Catholic High School, has been named by Ranney School as its new Athletic Director, effective July 1.

A native of Ocean Township and currently an assistant coach at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, Mrs. Gorman was a Shore Conference star during her own high school years at RBC. She went on to play soccer at West Virginia University (WVU), where as team captain she earned a NSCAA national ranking of #7, a Mid-Atlantic Region ranking of #1, led her team to a spot in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, and won the BIG EAST Conference Championship in 2006 and 2007—all while being named BIG EAST Player of the Week six times.

TINTON FALLS: NEW STUDENT CTR AT RANNEY

On February 1, Ranney School held a dedication ceremony for its new Mann Student Center, a 1,700-square foot renovated space (previously used as a Distance Learning Center) that features mobile work pods, cluster seating for group discussions, a large retractable projection screen for presentations and lectures, and a small café.

The open floor plan is modeled after today’s dynamic workplace designs, and provides students in grades 6-12 with a space to collaborate, socialize, and study. The center will also showcase student, alumni, and guest art exhibitions throughout the year, beginning with Ranney’s Global Citizens installations on global education, and the works of the school’s 2017 Scholastic Art Award winners.

RED BANK: MAN GUILTY IN CHILD PORN CASE

HOT-TOPIC_03A Red Bank man arrested on federal child pornography possession charges last July pleaded guilty Monday, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman.

James Paroline, 27, who worked as a camp counselor for 10 summers at the Ranney School in Tinton Falls, admitted downloading sexually explicit videos and images of children to his home computer two years ago, Fishman said.

RANNEY STUDENTS LEARN OF UNTOLD HISTORY

On January 25, the ongoing Distinguished Speaker Series at Ranney School gave students the opportunity to hear from writer, teacher, and Harvard doctoral candidate Clint Smith.

A 2014 National Poetry Slam champion, Mr. Smith (pictured) has focused  on the sociology of race and the history of inequality in the United States in his published works, the most recent being the poetry collection Counting Descent. His two TED Talks, “The Danger of Silence” and “How to Raise a Black Son in America,” have collectively been viewed more than 5 million times — and this past Wednesday he shared several of his poems, and the meaning behind them, with nearly 400 Upper School students and faculty on Ranney’s Tinton Falls campus.

ANTOINE-LED RANNEY TAKES MARTIN CLASSIC

At the Albert E. Martin Classic final Wednesday night, Ranny School freshman Bryan Antoine scored 27 points as the Panthers topped Red Bank Regional, 67-51, in front of a capacity crowd in Little Silver. Antoine scored 88 points in the three games and was named tournament MVPShore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

RBR, RANNEY TO FACE OFF IN MARTIN CLASSIC

Sadiq Palmer scored 22 and sophomore Matt Reardon put up 14 as host and defending champs Red Bank Regional topped Central Regional, 58-35, at the Albert E. Martin Classic in Little Silver Monday. 

Meanwhile, with four freshmen on the starting squad, Ranney School, led by Bryan Antoine’s 34 points, ran away from Sayreville, 71-57 in a dunkfest. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights of those two games and more.

CHILD PORN SUSPECT WORKED AT RANNEY

HOT-TOPIC_03A Red Bank man arrested on federal child pornography charges this week worked at the Ranney School in Tinton Falls, the Asbury Park Press reported late Wednesday.

James Paroline, 26, worked as a camp counselor for 10 summers at the school, but was fired after he was taken into custody during a waranted search of his Pearl Street apartment early Tuesday, the Press reported.

BCC PROF EARNS NAT’L HONOR, AS TOPS IN NJ

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education have named Linda Wang, professor of mathematics at Brookdale County College, Lincroft,  the 2013 New Jersey Professor of the Year. Wang was selected from more than 350 top professors in the United States.  She was honored at an awards luncheon held Nov. 14 in Washington, D.C.

“I feel very honored to receive this award because I love teaching,” Wang said. “I love to be with the students and see how they grow, become successful and move on. They give me energy.”

A ‘FIRST’ FOR WEISS, AT LUNCH BREAK GALA

Famed Red Bank area rock photographer Mark Weiss has announced the donation of a series of classic rock and roll portraits from the 1970s and 1980s, to benefit the borough-based nonprofit Lunch Break and its 2013 Gala and Fundraiser event.weissguy-about-me2

The limited edition prints, assembled under the campaign title “Feels Like the First Time,” collect a set of images dating back to the first time that Weiss had photographed each of the subjects — a gallery of luminaries that includes Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, Alice Cooper, Cheech & Chong, David Johansen (New York Dolls), Debbie Harry (Blondie), Paul Stanley (Kiss), Sammy Hagar, members of Bon Jovi, Boston, and many more. Prints are signed by the artists as well as by Weiss, and are being auctioned here through October 8, via the online service CharityBuzz.

The fourth annual gala for the charitable organization under the direction of Gwendolyn Love takes place from 6 to 10 pm on Monday, October 21 at Navesink Country Club in Middletown. Tickets ($150 each; the majority tax deductible) include passed hors d’oeuvres, carving stations, music by the Pat Karwan Trio, a silent auction as well as a live auction conducted by Steve Trevelise of New Jersey 101.5. Also offered are a cash bar and and a 50/50 raffle ($30 a chance).

TINTON FALLS: SMOKE REPORTED AT RANNEY

[Update: The Asbury Park Press reports that an electrical fire damaged the roof of the GPA Building, which will be closed for repairs, but the school will open as normal Friday.] Volunteer firefighters were on the scene of a reported fire at the Ranney School on Hope Road in Tinton Falls Thursday evening. No flames were visible at about 8 p.m. The Asbury Park Press reported “smoke showing through the roof” and that no students were believed to be inside at the time of the event. (Photo by Wil Fulton. ROWERS RESCUED AFTER SQUALL FLIPS SHELLS

rowing-1-0503101A sudden wind storm that blew through the Red Bank area turned into an ordeal for eight teenaged rowers as two shells flipped in the Navesink River late Tuesday afternoon.

All the rowers, said to be female members of the Ranney School‘s crewing club, were plucked from the water safely, though all were taken by ambulance to Riverview Medical Center for checkups.

“They were all cold and wet,” said Captain Darren McConnell, spokesman for the Red Bank Police Department. He said the girls were roughly 15 years old.
