A Red Bank family is asking for helping finding an exotic tortoise that went missing Tuesday.
“It’s mating season, and the male apparently got a little too aggressive,” prompting the nine-inch-long female to climb over a barrier and flee, said borough animal control officer Henry Perez, who’s joined the search in the vicinity of Spring Street and Wallace Street.

A new water-safety sign was installed Wednesday at Red Bank’s Maple Cove, a popular Navesink River put-in spot for kayakers and canoeists.
With the help of Councilwoman Cindy Burnham, the sign was donated by the parents of David Civile, right, a 26-year-old Tinton Falls man who disappeared while kayaking in the Shrewsbury River off Little Silver in November, 2010. His remains were found two years later.
Signs donated by the David P. Civile Foundation for Boating Safety Awareness have also been installed in Little Silver, Fair Haven, Rumson and elsewhere in Monmouth County.

Four years after a Tinton Falls man disappeared while kayaking in the Shrewsbury River off Little Silver, his mother is on a campaign to ensure nothing like that happens again.
David Civile was 26 years old, “in great shape,” and excited about the kayak he’d purchased just three weeks earlier, his mother, Joan Civile, told the Red Bank council Monday night. The November morning that he put in at Little Silver Point Road, he’d just purchased waterproof pants.
“He just thought he was safe,” she recalled. “He said, ‘Mom, I’m in a river. If it’s bad, I’ll just come back.'”
The estranged husband of a Red Bank woman found murdered alongside the Garden State Parkway in 2011 was sentenced to 27 years in prison Thursday, NJ.com reports.
Superior Court Judge Richard English told Oscar Prior-Ramirez, 34, of Eatontown, that he must serve 85 percent of his sentence before he’s eligible for parole. The judge noted that Prior-Ramirez also has a U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement detainer, and so may be deported to Mexico upon his release, according to the report.
The estranged husband of a Red Bank woman found murdered alongside the Garden State Parkway in 2011 has pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter, the Monmouth County Prosecutor announced Tuesday.
Oscar Prior-Ramirez, 33, of Eatontown, admitted in court that he strangled his ex-wife, Viridiana Beltran-Gomez, 26, of Bank Street, during an argument on May 12, 2011, according to a press release from the office of Acting Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni.
The body of a 51-year-old Howell man was found in waters off Rumson Saturday after he’s believed to have drowned while crabbing.
Elek Szalay’s body was located by the U.S. Coast Guard at 10:14 a.m. at the confluence of the Navensink and Shrewsbury rivers, according to New Jersey State Police Sergeant Adam Grossman.

The remains of a Tinton Falls man who disappeared while kayaking in the Shrewsbury River two years ago have been found in Little Silver, New Jersey State Police announced Thursday.
David Civile, 26, vanished after launching on a solo excursion on November 17, 2010, a blustery day. He was reported missing that night, when his kayak was found near the uninhabited Sedge Island, which lies between Sea Bright and Rumson on the Shrewsbury River.
The report triggered an extensive, multi-day search that involved state and local police as well as the Coast Guard.
The estranged husband of a Red Bank woman missing since mid-May has been charged with her murder following the discovery of a body buried near the Garden State Parkway in Aberdeen, according to news reports over the weekend.
Oscar Prior-Ramirez, 31, or Eatontown, was charged in the death of Viridiana Beltran-Gomez, above, according to a report that first appeared in the Asbury Park Press Saturday night. Bail was set at $1.5 million.

For the second time in 11 days, law enforcement officers used a helicopter and police boat in a search of the Navesink River between Red Bank and Middletown Tuesday morning.
A spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s office was not immediately available to comment on whether the search, like the prior one, was related to the disappearance of 26-year-old Viridiana Beltran-Gomez.

Helicopters and emergency personnel from Little Silver, Rumson and elsewhere searched in vain for a kayaker who reportedly went missing in the Shrewsbury River Wednesday afternoon or early evening.
The search involved watercraft and at least two helicopters scouring the river from Highlands to Oceanport through sunset and into the darkness of night as gusty winds buffeted the region.
