RUMSON: ‘RIVAL’ TEENS UNITE TO SAVE LIVES

The sports rivalries among three Two River schools are legendary.  It is always a super sweet victory when the Red Bank Regional (RBR) Buccaneers can defeat Red Bank Catholic (RBC) Caseys or Rumson Fair Haven’s (RFH) Bulldawgs, and vice versa for all three teams, two of which are located on Ridge Road, and the other not too far away.

However, seven students from all three schools have recently collaborated to use that rivalry to generate a very positive event.

RED BANK: MHA PRESENTS ANNUAL DINNER

Each May, the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County (MHAMC) hosts an annual dinner to celebrate Mental Health Month, and honor individuals who have made a significant and lasting impact in the lives of Monmouth County residents.

On the evening of Wednesday, May 10, the MHAMC celebrates 67 years of providing a prevention focused support network for all in need of mental health services, when the yearly event returns to The Oyster Point Hotel in Red Bank from 6 to 9 p.m. Included are hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dessert, cash bar and a robust chance raffle during cocktail hour.

On Monday, August 29, the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County (MHA) will present its Annual Golf Classic and Cocktail Party, as part of MHA’s continued efforts to raise awareness and necessary funds for the free mental health services that MHA offers to members of the military and all families in Monmouth County.

Hosted at the Navesink Country Club in Middletown, the event highlights MHA’s mission of promoting mental health and wellness and improving the care and treatment of persons affected by mental illness. This mission is accomplished through MHA’s strength-based innovated program, education, advocacy community partnerships, and the shaping of public policy.

Beginning April 13, Wednesday’s child is full of wellness, not woe — as the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County (MHAMC) will offer free Trauma-Sensitive Yoga sessions to county residents who may be experiencing anxiety, stress, depression or other mental health concerns.

The free program will present three sessions each Wednesday at 4, 5, and 6 p.m., with all classes hosted at the spacious new rehearsal studios of Red Bank-based stage company Phoenix Productions (59 Chestnut Street, across from the Armory Ice Complex). All sessions are offered free of charge, and free on-site parking is available at the Phoenix building.

RED BANK: AN INVESTMENT IN WELLNESS

This funding will help MHA continue to provide local residents and Hurricane Sandy impacted families and individuals with free mental health counseling and expert information plus referral services.

RED BANK: RWJ SUPPORTS SANDY COUNSELING

Families and individuals whose lives were impacted by Hurricane Sandy will be provided with free mental health and expert information and referral services through July 2016, thanks to a generous grant awarded to the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recently awarded a grant in the amount $199,821 to sustain and expand mental health and social services in Monmouth County, related to the ongoing effects of the October 2012 “superstorm.” The MHA will continue to provide those services locally at the Red Bank Resource Network, now located at 103 Drs. James Parker Boulevard in Red Bank.

FAIR HAVEN: MONMOUTH MHA CELEBRATES LIFE

On Saturday, November 15, the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County will host its annual Fall Celebracíon, at the Raven and the Peach in Fair Haven.

Centered around the theme Viva La Vida — translated as Celebrate Life — the event will offer a Spanish themed menu with tapas and stations, Sangria, open bar, silent auction, and entertainment by The Haven. Proceeds from the event will support Shrewsbury-based MHA’s free programs and services that are available to all families in Monmouth County.

The event will honor Ramon Solhkhah, M.D. for his tremendous efforts to advocate, educate, and treat those affected by mental illness and drug addiction in Monmouth County. As Chairman of Psychiatry at  Jersey Shore University Medical Center, and Corporate Medical Director for Meridian Behavioral Health Services, Dr. Solhkhah has participated in numerous forums throughout Monmouth County, where he offered information and outlined treatment options for those addicted to heroin and prescription painkillers.

COUNTY MHA SCREENS PTSD DOC IN M’TOWN

On the afternoon of Sunday, March 30, the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County invites the public to a screening of the award winning documentary feature Between Iraq and a Hard Place.

Presented at 3 pm in the Middletown Arts Center, the event is the first military outreach initiative of 2014 for the local MHA, as the Shrewsbury-based organization continues to expand efforts to address the mental health needs of returning service members, veterans, and their families. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online or at the Middletown Arts Center Box Office.

COUNSELING FOR THE SANDY AFFLICTED

Most survivors of trauma return to normal in a relatively short period of time. However, some people will have stress reactions that do not go away on their own. Those that go untreated tend to only become worse. Time. coupled with counseling and support services, are the best way to get the survivors back to normal.

Because of a generous grant from the Hurricane Sandy NJ Relief Fund, the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County (MHA) will be able to continue to meet the mental health needs of Sandy impacted families and individuals through June 2015.

Free counseling, information and referral services for those who may still be struggling with trauma related stress reactions due to Hurricane Sandy will now be provided in Red Bank, at the Red Bank Resource Network (RBRN), 101 – 103 Shrewsbury Avenue.

Residents of Shrewsbury Borough can also take advantage of counseling services provided at the MHA main offices, 119 Avenue at the Common, Suite 5.
