hot topic red bank njThe would-be developer of an apartment building proposed for downtown Red Bank has lopped off a floor, redbankgreen has learned.

With that, builder Mazin ‘Patrick’ Kalian‘s project, at 19-29 Mechanic Street, would shrink by 20 percent, to 40 apartments instead of the previously proposed 50, and eliminate the need for key variances.

RED BANK: TWO HURT IN ROLLOVER CRASH

In yet another crash resulting in a rollover, two motorists were injured when their vehicles collided in Red Bank Friday afternoon.

According to police Chief Darren McConnell, the accident occurred at Bridge Avenue and Herbert Street at around 4 p.m.

At issue: whether the town had boxed itself in legally, getting nothing in return.

RIVERWALK PLAN REVISED AND REVIVED

After six years of dormancy, a 24-unit residential building planned for Mechanic Street in Red Bank is about to go into the ground, says its developer.

Only, not as far into the ground as initially expected.

Builder Tony Busch Sr. won unanimous borough zoning board approval last week to modify plans ok’d in 2006 for a four-story project dubbed Riverwalk. The changes include eliminating of all retail space at the ground level and replacing it with at-grade parking beneath three stories of residences. The original plan called for subterranean parking garage.

The project could begin going into the ground as early as next spring, except that “there’s no hole to dig,” Busch told redbankgreen.

Somebody had a rough, bloody night in Red Bank.

Office and store workers arrived downtown Thursday morning to find a window at the former Ashes Cigar Bar smashed and a heavy trail of blood running about 150 down Mechanic Street, where it ended in a pool on the apron of a driveway.

MASON OUT, LOVERSIDGE & VALET IN

Red Bank council members unloaded their attaboys on Frank Mason Wednesday, bidding a formal farewell to the borough’s outgoing finance chief, whose last day on the job is next Friday.

Mason, who’s taking the same position in Montclair, will be replaced, on an interim basis, by Bruce Loversidge, who held the position for more than 30 years before he retired.

VALET UP FOR A VOTE IN RED BANK

park_it_021There soon could be fewer cars circling downtown Red Bank in search of parking spots if the borough council gives the green light to a proposal by Red Bank RiverCenter Wednesday night.

The business promotion agency, in an effort to pull in more visitors, hopes to try valet parking on a trial basis.

“It’ll benefit anybody whose customer doesn’t want to drive around or park themselves,” RiverCenter Executive Director Nancy Adams said.

Motorists who covet the six spaces on Broad Street that will be dedicated to the valet service might have a different take, however.
