Two vocal majors from the Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Red Bank Regional High School have been selected to be part of the prestigious All Eastern Mixed Chorus. The two RBR students — Erin Ostrowski of Little Silver, and Jade Glab of Belmar — were selected from the ranks of students who earned spots in the New Jersey All State Chorus held earlier in the year.

Erin and Jake will join the 350 other students in the mixed chorus out of 1700, representing 11 northeastern states as well as the District of Columbia. The chorus is affiliated with NAfME, the National Association for Music Education.

Summer vacation may already be a distant memory borne away on a suddenly seasonal Navesink breeze — but to the students of the Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Red Bank Regional High School, the activities of the school-year break continue to impact the new academic year in the most positive ways.

“Our students never cease to amaze me with their level of dedication and pursuit of perfection for their craft,” observes VPA lead teacher Kris Zook. “I am always delighted to learn what wonderful programs they attended or experiences they had in pursuit of higher performing art achievement.”

LITTLE SILVER: A CIRCLE OF LIFE, AT RBR

Left to right: Ava DiLouie (Timon the meerkat), Matthew Maxcy (Simba), and Maggi Hough (Pumbaa the warthog) co-starred in an August 10 production of THE LION KING JR., presented for one night only by the students of the Visual and Performing Arts Summer Academy at Red Bank Regional High School. Over 40 student actors, musicians, crew members and designers collaborated on the staging of the musical, a special young-audiences version of the Broadway hit adapted from the beloved Disney animated film. RBR faculty member Kris Zook directed the production, which spotlighted the songs of Elton John and Tim Rice, and also starred Annabelle Adams, Lev Brewer, Jamie Lynn Eckhoff, Julie Homza, and Sophie Wright. The evening at RBR also featured an exhibit of visual art works created by VPA program students under the supervision of RBR art teacher Barbara Beckett.

Every month, the senior citizen group known as the Shrewsbury Homesteaders meets at the borough’s historic Presbyterian Church to conduct their business. Sometimes they mix a little pleasure with business — and following a speech by Shrewsbury Mayor Don Burden at their most recent meeting in January, the Homesteaders were treated to the instrumental talents and beautiful voices of Red Bank Regional High School and its Visual and Performing Arts Academy.

The classically trained piano and voice major students performed a variety of their repertoire for the Homesteaders. Griffin Perry performed “The Tempest” by Beethoven; Peter Lootsma played “Sonata N. 14 in C Minor” by Mozart, while Joseph Ferguson offered “Prelude and Fugue N. 17 in Aᵇ Major” by J.S. Bach (all three students are from Little Silver). Pianist Jalen Willis of Neptune City showcased the Jazz genre with “Joes’ Fun Mood Blues” by Joe Utterback.

Red Bank Regional vocal majors Shannon O’Donnell and Brooke McDermott are on their way to Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry to to perform in the annual All-National Honor mixed chorus.

Two vocal majors at Red Bank Regional High School‘s Visual and Performing Arts academy have received the esteemed distinction of acceptance to the very prestigious All-National Honors Ensembles sponsored by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

Shannon O’Donnell and Brooke McDermott, both of Little Silver, will perform at the historic Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, TN during the NAfME National Conference in October, 2014, along with the other top teenage vocalists in the country selected to the National Choir. Both will be performing in the mixed chorus.
