RED BANK: FACADE REPAIR UNDERWAY

rb 21 broad 071116 2The sidewalk and parking spots in front of 21 Broad Street in Red Bank remained blocked off Tuesday morning, one day after a 12-foot long section of the facade broke off from above a third-story window and crashed to the sidewalk.

Assistant construction code official John Drucker tells redbankgreen the piece that fell was a plaster-covered cap that broke off after the wood beneath it rotted away. A contractor was on the scene Tuesday morning with a lift to remove the additional capping above the third-floor windows and to check the integrity of the overall facade, he said. The building, which has been vacant since the departure of Agostino Antiques in 2012, is being used temporarily for the shooting of next season’s ‘Comic Book Men’ on AMC. (Click to enlarge)

FIRE INSPECTOR INSPIRES DREAD & RESPECT

There’s no mistaking the seriousness of a situation when the white-and-red cruiser marked ‘6431’ pulls in front of your home or business.

The man behind the wheel is something of a fate holder, there to deliver good news or bad, to tell what you did right or wrong, to say you’re ready to open for business or that there’s more work to do.

“When the 31 rolls up, they know it’s John,” said John Drucker, Red Bank’s fire inspector and building code official, positions akin to taxman in terms of the dread they inspire.

But Drucker, 53,  says his aim is to make sure a home- or businessowner has followed every step required to complete a project. It’s a job designed to focus on minutia, and can send property owners to their flashpoints. But it’s a job that, once done, has a payoff for everybody involved, he says.

While the Red Bank government is working to show that the town is “open for business,” a West Side property owner is among those who say the door still isn’t open wide enough.

“I would have to agree with everyone who’s ever said Red Bank is difficult to do business with,” said Geoff Johnson, who has approved plans to build a kayak and canoe rental and boat club on the banks of the Swimming River, at the north end of Shrewsbury Avenue.
