RUMSON: LATE WRITE-IN PUSH FALLS SHORT

An eleventh-hour write-in campaign for Rumson council ended with a pair of soccer dads missing their goal but feeling they’d scored some points Tuesday.

Tim McCooey and Tom Ridgway, running under the banner of Rumson Family since launching their campaign less than two weeks ago, polled a combined 1,445 votes, compared to incumbent Republican Joe Hemphill, with 1,176, and zoning board member Laura Atwell, also a Republican, with 1,143, according to unofficial tallies posted by the Monmouth County Clerk’s office.

Inspired in part by what they saw as an insufficient response by the current administration to the sudden appearance in town of Oxford House, a drug-and-alcohol recovery home that was the scene of a drug fatality on October 13, McCooey and Ridgway hastily built a campaign that they said would live on, win or lose.

Ah, but which Republicans?

In a development that may add drama to Rumson’s usual election-night snoozer, two political newcomers have mounted an eleventh-hour write-in campaign, hoping to harness what they say is frustration with their party’s incumbents.

RUMSON: SAME FACES

By DUSTIN RACIOPPI

Incumbent Republicans Joan DeVoe and Joe Hemphill maintained the status quo for Rumson by winning another election tonight, securing an all-Republican council.

Democratic challengers Michael Steinhorn and Philip Wagner put up a little fight, but voters seem OK with how things work.

“I feel elated that people have continued to show confidence in me,” DeVoe said. “I’ve heard them, will continue to listen to them and keep their interests in the front of my mind.”

CANDIDATE Q&As: RUMSON

election_2010_qa

Earlier this month, redbankgreen emailed questionnaires to local candidates for public office in towns with contested elections on November 2. We began running the replies last Friday, starting with those from Middletown, where four candidates are vying for two seats on the five-member Township Committee. We continued on Monday with answers from three of the four candidates for two council seats in Sea Bright.

Today we feature Rumson, where four candidates are seeking two spots on the borough council. Only the two Republicans, however, responded; no reply was received from Democratic challengers Michael Steinhorn and Philip Wagner.

Here’s the Rumson ballot: rumson-ballot-2010

Tomorrow, the series concludes with Red Bank.
