After months of hearings, Red Bank’s rent leveling board ruled Thursday night that four tenants at Grandville Towers were entitled to money for being deprived access to the swimming pool this summer.

The judgment? A one-time rent credit of $33, plus $3.96 for missed use of the gym at the 91-unit highrise.

After three hearings, a partial verdict is in: tenants at Red Bank’s Grandville Towers received “reduced service” when the swimming pool didn’t open this summer.

The Red Bank Charter School won approval Thursday night to create a gym in part of a commercial building it plans to buy on Monmouth Street.

In the process, the zoning board hearing on the plan re-exposed some long-simmering resentments harbored by parents who contend the charter school’s existence is a drain on the local school district.

FAIR HAVEN: FAMILY DISPLACED BY GYM FIRE

A Fair Haven family was displaced from home after and early-morning fire Sunday, according to a report by aap.com.

No one was injured in the 6:16 a.m. fire in a basement gym at 7 Haggers Lane. The fire was extinguished half an hour later, according to the report.

RED BANK TO RAZE HOUSE AT BOROUGH HALL

106 monmouth 012314Red Bank officials said Wednesday that they’re soliciting bids to demolish a former home at 106 Monmouth Street, which sits at the edge of the municipal complex.

Owned by the borough since the late 1990s, the house has been used for record storage and as an unofficial gym for police officers, but is no longer needed by the town and has fallen into such disrepair that it’s not worth rehabilitating, said Mayor Pasquale Menna. The demolition will create extra parking spaces, he said.

SEA BRIGHT: FAST AUCTION FOR FORMER GYM

Things are looking up for Sea Bright. The hurricane-ravaged town isn’t merely rebuilding what was wiped out by the storm – it’s moving forward and attracting investors willing to bet on its future.

Case in point: the former home of Adrenaline Fitness.

On Wednesday morning, a dozen prospective buyers showed up to place bids on the three-story multi-use building at 1054 Ocean Avenue. Within a few minutes, five of them bid up to the property from an opening $500,000 to $700,000.

Rumson resident Christina Galinos walked away with the prize, for $720,000.

“I love the location, and I just think that Sea Bright is a great town that has so much potential,“ Galinos told redbankgreen afterward. “It’s going to come back even stronger. I’d love to be a part of that.”

YMCA SUES BOROUGH OVER PLAN DENIAL

As expected, the Community YMCA has filed a lawsuit against Red Bank’s zoning board for its decision to not allow the Y to nearly double the size of its Maple Avenue facility, putting the nonprofit at odds with the town on two legal fronts.

The suit, filed on May 18 in state Superior Court in Freehold, says that the board’s resolution denying the Y’s expansion plan “lacks a factual basis for its negative findings and provides nothing more that conclusions unsupported by fact or applicable land use law, ” and therefore makes the board’s decision unreasonable.

The Y is seeking to reverse the zoning board’s decision and win approval of the variance applications and site plan. It is also asking for compensation for the cost of the suit and whatever other relief the court deems just.
