RED BANK: GROUNDHOGS SEE EARLY SPRING

Punxsutawney Phil may not have the best track record as a forecaster. But he did not see his shadow Sunday, which tradition says is indicative of an early spring.

Closer to the Greater Red Bank Green, Milltown Mel, using an identical forecasting model, came to the same conclusion.

Meantime, the workweek gets off to a spring-ish start Monday, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures peaking in the high 50s, according to the National Weather Service.

RED BANK: ‘GROUNDHOG DAY’ OF MUGGINESS

A trio of groundhogs dined on the riverfront lawn outside the Red Bank Public Library last Thursday evening.

Weatherwise, it may feel like ‘Groundhog Day‘ for a stretch of the coming week. According to the National Weather Service, there’s a chance of heavy rains with localized flooding on the afternoons of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. And even when it’s not raining, it’ll be hot and muggy, with peak temperatures in the high 80s.

ON THE GREEN: CANCELLATIONS AND SUCH II

Sidewalks and roads were getting slippery as temperatures fell across the Greater Red Bank Green early Monday afternoon, soon after snow and rain turned them slushy. • Brookdale Community College, all locations: All classes and activities that begin before 10:30 a.m. are canceled. Employees are to report to work at 10 a.m.

• Shrewsbury school:10:30 a.m. opening. Preschool cancelled.

ON THE GREEN: A WET, THEN COLD GROUNDHOG

Punxsutawney Phil is unlikely to see his shadow Monday, also known as Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and beyond. He certainly wouldn’t see it here on the Greater Red Bank Green, where an earlier forecast of snow was nixed – it was 43 degrees in Red Bank at 6 a.m. But rain was expected to persist through early afternoon and change to snow after 2 p.m. Temperatures are expected to plummet throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service.

UPDATE: The rodent is reported to have seen his shadow, so we’re in for six more weeks of winter, according to the legend. (Photo illustration by Trish Russoniello)

FORECAST: GOOD EATIN’ WEATHER

The week starts off damp, but sunshine will prevail by the time family and friends gather for Thanksgiving, according to the National Weather Service.
