RED BANK: GODDESSES FROM BABYLON

The breathtaking paintings of Iraqi artist Saadi Babely go on display at the Oyster Point Hotel starting with a reception Thursday.

He hails from no less storied a place than Babylon — and we’re not talking Long Island. As a professor at Baghdad University and a member of the Iraq Freedom Art Movement, Saadi Babely escaped the regime of Saddam Hussein and its program of persecution of citizens involved in the arts, and would lose two of his siblings to Saddam’s troops. Educated in the United States, he made his way to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and eventually back to America, where the mythological figure of the Babylonian goddess Ishtar would once again take flight in his paintings.

Inspired by the deep history of his homeland while remaining contemporary in style and theme, Babely’s paintings are the subject of the latest art installation at Red Bank’s Oyster Point HotelGoddesses: An Art Collector Shares His Bounty. The exhibit — one of two debuting in town during the coming evenings — opens with a public-welcome reception this Thursday.

RED BANK AREA: ART NEVER VACATIONS

Works by textile artist Lisa Lackey are on display through Sunday at the Monmouth Museum’s Nilson Gallery.

Vacation time is somehow never downtime for Red Bank-area artists and the spaces whose walls they festoon, and the mid-August interlude remains a busy one for visual creatives, with a number of exhibits opening or ongoing at venues around the Greater Green (even one that’s technically closed for the season).

RED BANK: FESTIVAL SERVES FILMS & EVENTS

A portion of the colorful mural painted earlier this month on the Catherine Street wall of Kitch Organic heralds the second annual coming of the Indie Street Film Festival, co-founded by Jay Webb, below.

To Wanamassa resident Jay Webb, losing oneself in the flickering lights of a hushed, darkened room is only part of the joy of a film festival for cinephiles. Another is getting together and gabbing about what they’ve seen, and who’s doing what in an art form wholly dependent on collaboration.

Which is one reason the schedule for the second edition of the Indie Street Film Festival, which returns to Red Bank next week, is studded with community events in between screenings of some 60 films.

RED BANK: ARTISTS REUNITE AT OYSTER POINT

“Loving” by Edy Ottesen and “Choose Meaning Over Emptiness” by Tyrell Masse can be seen in the group show installation ‘Now and Then,’ opening Wednesday at the Oyster Point Hotel.

“It doesn’t take long to figure out that I love brilliant color once you have viewed a few of my paintings,” says Edy Ottesen. “But, I can slip off the wagon sometimes and go all greys and monochromatic.”

A Brooklyn-bred painter who divides her time between Red Bank and Boca Raton, Florida, Ottesen is one of several locally connected creative women who now and then assemble to display their wares in a group-show setting — and beginning with an opening reception this Wednesday evening, the “gang of four” will join forces for an eighth consecutive year with “Now and Then,” the latest in a series of art installations at Red Bank’s Oyster Point Hotel. RED BANK: ART AND ABOUT, AROUND TOWN

JOY AND BLESSINGS 30x48 acrylic by A.Margulies“Joys and Blessings” by Annette Margulies (above) is among the works on display in “Embracing Change,” opening Thursday at the Oyster Point Hotel. MaryAnn Goodwin, whose “End of Season” is below, is one of two local painters spotlighted in a show at the Monmouth Arts Council

end-of-season maryann goodwinIt’s an installation that reunites a quartet of local female artists for the seventh consecutive year, but when Annette Margulies, Tyrrell Masse, Edy Ottesen and Leona Tenebruso-Shultes convene once more Thursday evening at Red Bank’s Oyster Point Hotel, it will be all about “Embracing Change.”

Debuting with a public-welcome reception between 7 and 9 p.m. — and staying up on the walls and walkways of the riverfront hotel’s lobby and atrium through late August — the exhibit of paintings is the latest offering from curator Gerda Liebmann, the Swiss-born multimedia specialist who coordinates the ongoing series of art installations at the riverfront hotel.

It’s also one of several art events going on in and around Red Bank in the days ahead; take it around the corner for more.

RED BANK: PAINTING THE WOMAN CARD

Harvey,_Karissa_-_Beach_Ballet“Beach Ballerinas” by Karissa Harvey (above) and “Gingko” by Pat Hutchinson (below) are among the works on display in WOMEN PAINT WOMEN, the art exhibit that opens with a reception tonight at the Oyster Point Hotel.

Hutchinson,_Pat_-_GingkoAs Ellen Martin tells it, “I started the Jersey Artist Registry (JAR), an online gallery, in 2013 to showcase the talent of New Jersey artists in a way that was immediately visually impactful and accessible (not three or four menus down).”

It’s an endeavor that led the Monmouth Beach painter, photographer and mixed-media specialist to mount her first group show of JAR artists at Asbury Park’s intimately scaled Hotel Tides in 2015. With the success of that show, and a move to the more expansive environs of Red Bank’s Oyster Point Hotel, Martin professes that her original thought was to again open the next exhibit to all artists, “but then thought I should do what I could to tip the balance of the male-dominated art world.”

RED BANK: A BANQUET FOR THE EYES

oyster pt artSTILL LIFE WITH BIRDS AND DESSERTS and other paintings by Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern are on display throughout the Oyster Point Hotel, beginning with a reception on Friday evening, May 15.

For the latest in a series of art installations at The Oyster Point — exhibits that have turned the hotel’s lobby and other common areas into a strolling gallery space — Swiss-born, internationally exhibited multimedia artist Gerda Liebmann has curated a banquet of sorts.

Officially opening with a public-welcome reception this Friday, May 15 (and remaining on display at the Bodman Place landmark through June 29), The Painted Banquet is a solo-show look at the work and worldview of area-based painter (and Brookdale Community College faculty member) Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern.

CLIPPINGS: LITERALLY!

CLIPPINGS_220Katie Corr, a hair stylist at Glen Goldbaum 72 in Red Bank, was “very young” when she started to do hair, but still loves it, she says – “especially when the clients leave the salon feeling much better then when they arrived.”

“It’s not just the hair,” she says. “Clients talk about their lives… sometimes I feel like a therapist.”

She’s seen here with client Lisette Lynch.
