LITTLE SILVER: IMMIGRATION POET VISITS RBR

Award-winning British poet Caroline Smith (at far right in photo) made Red Bank Regional a special stop on her book tour for “The Immigration Handbook.”  She was invited to the school by RBR alumnus Rik van Hemmen (at left), and joined for the occasion by students Bella Scheider (Union Beech), Jack Davis (Little Silver), and Tamia Waddy (Red Bank).

At its September 27 board meeting, the  Award-winning British Poet Caroline Smith came to the United States recently on a tour to promote her latest work The Immigration Handbook — and along the way, she did a dear friend a favor and came to talk to his alma mater, Red Bank Regional High School.

RBR alumnus Rik van Hemmen told the assembled students, which included Creative Writing, International Baccalaureate and English AP classes as well as English Language Learners, of his own experiences coming to this school and country as an immigrant back in the 1970s. More →

LITTLE SILVER: RBR NAMES 6 TO HALL OF FAME

On the morning of April 28, an annual highlight of spring took place once again at Red Bank Regional High School,when the BUC Backer Foundation inducted six RBR graduates into its Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.

State Senator Jennifer Beck, Red Bank Mayor Pasquale Menna, Red Bank Councilman Michael Whelan, Shrewsbury Mayor Donald Burden, and Little Silver Councilman Daniel O’Hern were among the friends, family members and community neighbors who gathered in the school’s theatre to celebrate the contributions of this year’s honorees. The inductees were introduced by the RBR Buccaneer Newspaper students, who wrote bios on the alumni for a commemorative journal, and musical accompaniment was provided by the piano majors of RBR’s Visual and Performing Arts Academy. The festivities continued with a celebratory luncheon catered by the RBR culinary students.

The Red Bank Regional (RBR) School District conducts numerous community service activities during the holidays, from helping homeless families in Monmouth County, buying livestock to address world hunger, creating holiday cards for kids in hospitals and sending stockings stuffed with sweets to our troops in the Middle East.

But at the same time they also look inward — and through a partnership between the in-school program The SOURCE and the BUC Backer Foundation, RBR helps fill wishes for families within our own school who would otherwise not know such happy holidays.

GREETINGS FROM RBR, TO KIDS OF ST. JUDE’S

The students were among the more than 75 participants who created 125 fanciful holiday cards filled with best wishes for the children at St. Jude’s Hospital in Chicago. RBR teachers Jennifer Casaine and Cassandra Dorn act as coordinators for the activity, which expanded this year to two extra days, and which drew the participation of everyone from athletes to International Baccalaureate students.

RBR TACKLES HUNGER AT THE BIG GAME

Anyone attending the game will receive free admittance if they bring non-perishable food  items at the game entrance.

A new tradition will meet the old, as football fans who donate a non-perishable food item will receive free admission to the football game between Red Bank Regional High School and Long Branch High School this Thanksgiving. The traditional matchup — one of the longest-running in the Shore area — will take place on Thanksgiving Day, November 26. Kickoff is at 10 am at RBR, and all who donate—parents, children, students, RBR fans, Long Branch fans — will get in for free.

All the food collected will be donated to the Salvation Army of Red Bank, an organization that assists people in over 30 area towns, explained English teacher Cassandra Dorn, who helped initiate RBR’s fifth Football Food Drive.

LITTLE SILVER: A CLASS BATTLE, FOR A CAUSE

For the fourth year in a row, Red Bank Regional High School has utilized a “Battle of the Class” competition to motivate a school-wide food drive which benefits the local community. Over 7200 food items were donated from February through April 1 to help fill the food shelves of Lunch Break and the Salvation Army in Red Bank, at a time when large donations aren’t typically made to local pantries.

The competition included student classes and staff members, divided into teams based on zodiac signs. The winner was Team Gemini/Pisces, who overwhelmed the other competitors with over 1100 items. They team a $1000 prize toward their class account (donated by the National Honor Society), and earned points toward the popular “Battle of the Classes” activity taking place in May.

Every December, the English office at Red Bank Regional High School moves aside piles of books to make room for piles of holiday presents. For over ten years, teachers, staff and students at RBR have played Santa for residents of Linkages, an organization in Tinton Falls that houses homeless mothers and their children.

A FOOTBALL FOOD DRIVE FOR RBR BUCS

Many area residents fill their Thanksgiving with football, family and food.  Others, however, have a lot less on their plates.  Literally.

This Thanksgiving, fans enjoying the traditional Red Bank Regional-Long Branch football game can earn free admission while helping the needy in our area.  The RBR Athletic Department, in conjunction with the Red Bank Corps of the Salvation Army, is sponsoring a Football Food Drive on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, November 27.  Fans can simply bring a non-perishable food item to the game and receive a ticket good for free admission.  Food will be delivered to the Salvation Army of Red Bank.
