With two Italian restaurants and a television show about the food and wine of Italy in his portfolio, Victor Rallo‘s latest venture might strike some as a sharp departure from his obsession with his ancestral homeland.

But Surf BBQ, which opened last week in Rumson, is simply the latest turn in a continuing quest for culinary “authenticity,” Rallo told redbankgreen in a recent interview.

“This is about the only true, historical American cuisine,” he said. “I wanted to open something great, but I wanted it to be true to its origins.”

The Greater Red Bank Green, teeming with culinary variety but short on ribs, is about to get some finger-lickin’ fare.

The former Molly Maguire’s Gastropub in Rumson, which closed Tuesday, will reopen in January as Surf BBQ, buyer Victor Rallo tells redbankgreen.

Adam Sobel, owner of the popular vegan food truck the Cinnamon Snail, doesnt get all preachy about being a vegan. Instead of sermons about the evils of the standard American diet or the darker side of factory-farmed animals, the 30-year-old Red Bank resident lets his food speak for itself, and hopes his cooking will get non-vegan customers to connect the dots on their own.

Since hitting the road three years ago, the Cinnamon Snail has become a Red Bank Farmers Market staple while amassing a considerable following in Manhattan, where it has won multiple awards. Mobile Cuisine Magazine, for example, named the Snail “America’s Favorite Vegan Food Truck” in 2012.

redbankgreen sat down with Sobel on the front porch of his home over a cup of chai and some yerba mate to discuss the trials and tribulations of a kitchen on wheels and whats next for the Cinnamon Snail.

Sharon Lee wants to bring Dumpster diving to a whole new level a cleaner, cooler level.

And she wants to bring it to Red Bank.

The third-term councilwoman, ripping a page from a two-year-old New York Times article on Dumpsters that were converted to public pools in Brooklyn, suggested to her counterparts on the dais that Red Bank, after the general pant-and-gasp brought on by last week’s heatwave, think outside the box by going inside the box.

NEW ON BROAD: HIP, HUMBLE & VINTAGE

It took Danny Weinberg a matter of seconds to decide on Red Bank as the newest location for his longtime business, Hip And Humble Home.

Weinberg, a Teaneck resident, had recently closed his New York City shop and was driving through Red Bank about six weeks ago when he spotted a vacancy on Broad Street.

“I just drove down here one day, saw the ‘for lease’ sign and the price was right,” Weinberg, 48, said. “I didn’t look anywhere else.”

Six weeks later, Weinberg’s stock of unique wooden imports, mostly from Indonesia dining tables, chairs, dressers and bed frames, among others is packed into 58 Broad, and Weinberg is ready to tap into demand for used furniture.
