lunch beamThe owner of new art gallery approved by Red Bank officials Monday night plans to feature a sculpture based on one of 20th-century America’s most iconic photographs on its exterior.

Sergio Furnari’s “Lunchtime on a Skyscraper – A Tribute to America’s Heroes,” will sit atop a parapet at the rear of the Clay Street building, says Wanderlust Gallery owner Ken Schwartz, who also plans to add mad dashes of color in the form of murals to brighten up a drab stretch of garages and parking lots.

“I didn’t look at this as signage,” Schwartz told the planning board, which unanimously granted him variances for murals he plans to have painted on the long-vacant warehouse. “I look at it as the building itself being a piece of artwork.”

RED BANK: A POT STORE? WELL, SHOOT…

147 broad 062114 1147 broad 062114 2Is Red Bank getting a medical marijuana dispensary? That was the takeaway for a number of redbankgreen readers when they saw the painting above, which went up in a window of the long-vacant Lamplighter store at Broad Street and Harding Road over the weekend.

It’s our understanding that an art gallery is taking the space, though neither artist David Benegas – whose painting of a gun is in another window there – nor building owner Scott Diamond could be reached for immediate comment.

[UPDATE] Benegas tells us he’s opening an art gallery there in August, and that the pot image is “just a publicity stand to show how the power of Art can get a message to people.”  (Photos by John T. Ward. Click to enlarge)
