Memorial Day Commemoration, Monday, 11 a.m., Veterans’ Monument, 51 Monmouth Street, corner of Drummond Place. The event follows a 10 a.m. ceremony hosted by the volunteer fire and first aid squads at borough hall, 90 Monmouth Street.

FAIR HAVEN

Fair Haven’’s Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday at 9 a.m., beginning at Knollwood School, on Hance Road, and ending at Memorial Park, River Road.

CHAMPS IN 2013, R-FH TRIES TO STAY HUNGRY

How do you top an 11-1 season that ended with a NJSIAA Group II State Championship? After the best football campaign in school history, the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional Bulldogs are starting anew, having lost 32 players to graduation. But the roster still boasts running back Charlie Volker, who steamrolled to more than 2,100 yards and 27 TDs last year, and under Coach Bryan Batchler, the theme this year is “stay hungry.”

RED BANK CATHOLIC AIMS HIGHER THIS YEAR

What’s the next level of achievement for a football team that went 10-1 last year but failed to get to the big game? An undefeated season and a state championship, say the players at Red Bank Catholic, who open this year’s campaign on September 5 at Wall and then return to Count Basie Field for six straight Friday night home games.

WEAR A SNUGGIE, BUT BRING AN UMBRELLA

RED BANK: VIOLENT CRIME DOWN, THEFT UP

AUTHORITIES_RB2Though violent crime declined, a jump in reported thefts boosted Red Bank’s crime rate through the first 11 months of 2013, according to data released last Friday by the New Jersey Attorney General.

The annual Uniform Crime Report data shows a 2.1 percent uptick in overall crime in the borough, largely on the basis of a 16.8 percent increase in larceny.

WEATHER TOYS WITH FORECASTERS

Forecasters, meanwhile, seemed in a scramble for clarity on how bad the storm would be. The National Weather Service has upped its estimated accumulation total to 2 to 4 inches – from 1 to 3 inches earlier today. The Weather Underground, meanwhile, has gone in the other direction, changing its forecast to 1 to 3 inches, from 3 to 5 earlier in the day. The Weather Channel has backed down to 1 to 3, from 2 to 4, and Facebook fave Bob ‘Weatherman’ Burger has eased back to 2 to 4 inches in our region, from 3 to 6. RED BANK: TOO WARM FOR SNOW?

And yet, the first flurries of the 2013-’14 season were falling in Red Bank starting around 7:10 Tuesday morning, after temperatures dropped almost 15 degrees in the preceding two hours.

RED BANK: BURNHAM BREAKS DEMS’ ‘HOLD’

kathy horgan 110513Activist Cindy Burnham scored an upset victory, emerging as the top vote-getter by a single vote in Tuesday’s election for Red Bank council.

“I’m shocked,” Burnham said at a small gathering of partisans in an office above the Bistro restaurant on Broad Street. “But I’m very happy that we can break the Democrats’ hold” on the governing body, she told redbankgreen.

Incumbent Democrat Kathy Horgan finished second, retaining her seat, while three-termer Sharon Lee lost hers, trailing Horgan by 24 votes, and brash Republican newcomer Sean Di Somma finished fourth.

Mayor Pasquale Menna said that Democrats would ask for a recount because of the close results.

RUMSON: LATE WRITE-IN PUSH FALLS SHORT

An eleventh-hour write-in campaign for Rumson council ended with a pair of soccer dads missing their goal but feeling they’d scored some points Tuesday.

Tim McCooey and Tom Ridgway, running under the banner of Rumson Family since launching their campaign less than two weeks ago, polled a combined 1,445 votes, compared to incumbent Republican Joe Hemphill, with 1,176, and zoning board member Laura Atwell, also a Republican, with 1,143, according to unofficial tallies posted by the Monmouth County Clerk’s office.

Inspired in part by what they saw as an insufficient response by the current administration to the sudden appearance in town of Oxford House, a drug-and-alcohol recovery home that was the scene of a drug fatality on October 13, McCooey and Ridgway hastily built a campaign that they said would live on, win or lose.
