RED BANK: NURTURING FORTUNE’S LEGACY

With an exhibit examining the history of America’s Black press opening October 28 at Red Bank’s T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center, redbankgreen presents this feature story, written for CivicStory, about the center’s namesake.

When the Black newspaper editor and civil-rights activist T. Thomas Fortune moved to Red Bank in the summer of 1901, his arrival was front-page news. “Mr. Fortune is one of the most noted colored men of the country,” the Red Bank Register reported.

But a century later, the elegant Red Bank home that Fortune’s family called Maple Hall stood vandalized and derelict, its brick foundation crumbling, its windows boarded up. Still, the once-grand old place caught Gilda Rogers’ eye whenever she passed by. “That home probably was something really special in its heyday,” she would think.

She wasn’t wrong.

RED BANK: CANADA WILDFIRE SMOKE RETURNS

Smoke from forest fires raging in Canada affected the Greater Red Bank Green for the second time in a month, laying a haze over the Navesink River early Friday morning.

The smoke, which has traveled as far as Europe, is expected to be less intense than the local smothering of June 7, but air quality still “may approach or exceed unhealthy standards,” according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Combined with high temperatures, that could make for especially uncomfortable conditions outdoors.

Americans should should “remember those people who gave all so you could have the life you have,” a keynote speaker told about 125 area residents assembled in Red Bank for a Memorial Day ceremony Monday.

“They made a sacrifice so that we could all be here and have the ability to live the lives that we do,” Army Colonel Bill Putnam told the gathering, at the Veterans Monument on Monmouth Street at Drummond Place.

RED BANK: ICELESS WINTER FOILS ICEBOATERS

In decades past, members of Red Bank’s North Shrewsbury Ice Boat & Yacht Club, the oldest organization of its kind in America, could count on winters packed with racing and casual sailing.

No more. What’s now called the Navesink River has not frozen well enough for iceboating for five years straight, sending the club’s members, including Mark Petersen and Steve Foster, right, north in search of ice elsewhere. And even that hunt is often futile, as borough resident Brian Donohue reports in his latest ‘Positively Jersey’ video essay for News12. Watch the short video here.

There’s no hope of ice crystals forming Thursday, when local daytime temperatures are expected to crack 60 degrees again (following Wednesday’s peak of 69), according to the National Weather Service. Check out the extended forecast below.

After a one-year pandemic interruption, groups of school children returned to the annual Veterans Day commemoration in Red Bank Thursday.

With poems, songs and handmade ‘thank you’ cards for veterans, students from St. James School, the Red Bank Charter School and Red Bank Middle School participated in the event, held at the Veterans Monument on Monmouth Street – alongside the onetime borough hall.

Then he learned what was happening in New York City, and immediately remembered: Louise’s husband, Drew, worked at the World Trade Center.

As it became clearer in the weeks after the November 3 election that Joe Biden would become the 46th president of the United States, Adriana Medina Gomez‘s phone began ringing more than usual.

“Among our clients, there was a sense of, ‘OK, Biden won, now what? What can I do to get legal?'” said Medina Gomez, a legal assistant in the Red Bank office of the Am erican Friends Service Committee, a Quaker social justice organization. “Like immediately, the calls started pouring in about that.”

Fair Haven will participate in a national memorial to lives lost in the COVID-19 pandemic by lighting up Memorial Park with luminaria Tuesday night.

With its announcement of the event Monday, the borough became the first town on the Greater Red Bank Green to join an inauguration-eve event that calls for a lighting around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington DC.
