hot topic red bank njRed Bank Regional students and parents packed a board of ed meeting Wednesday night in a bid to save the ice hockey and golf programs from a budgetary axe.

With a preliminary spending plan calling for a 6.5-percent tax increase, board members defended the cuts as necessary before parents appeared to coalesce around a plan to save the sports through outside fundraisers.

MTOWN NORTH TOPS RFH ON ICE, 8-6

Down 5-1 in the second period, Rumson-Fair Haven eventually drew even with Middletown North in the Handchen Cup final on the ice in Wall Thursday night. But led by Bobby Hampton, who had two goals and two assists, North skated off with an 8-6 win and the cup, and now turns its attention to a state championship tournament.(Video courtesy of Shore Sports Zone.)

HOCKEY: RBC TOPS OCEAN 4-2 AT ARMORY

HOCKEY: GARAVENTE SHINES AS RFH TOPS SJV

Rumson-Fair Haven’s Robbie Garavente scored four goals and Conor Deverin added a pair of goals and three assists as the Bulldogs scored eight straight goals after trailing Saint John Vianney 2-1 in the second period. Watch the Shore Sports Zone highlights from the Red Bank Armory.

RFH is ineligible for the state tournament after going over the limit on disqualifications with a December brawl with Red Bank Regional, but the Bulldogs now advance to the semifinals of the Hanchden Cup bracket in the Shore Conference Tournament.

HOCKEY: RBC GOES THROUGH THE ROOF IN WIN

An unusual pass through the roof trusses sparked a three-goal surge in the final 1:22 of play as Red Bank Catholic topped Rumson-Fair Haven on the ice at the Red Bank Armory Wednesday. After Will Catalono put R-FH in the lead with six minutes to go, Kyle Amato tied things up, and then the Caseys’ Evan Hoey sent a pass that went through the roof supports and fell down to Alec Mintz, who delivered the game winner. HOCKEY: RED BANK CATHOLIC TOPS BRICK

It was senior night at the Red Bank Armory as Evan Hoey and Alec Mintz had one goal and two assists to propel Red Bank Catholic to a 4-3 win against Brick Township  Wednesday night. OUTDOOR CLASSIC HOCKEY: R-FH 7, RBC 5


Fans lined the boards and the upper terrace of the Navesink Country Club in Middletown Saturday night for the annual Winter Classic hockey game, pitting Red Bank Catholic against Rumson-Fair Haven. Connor Deverin and Robbie Garavante scored two goals apiece as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 4-2 lead after two periods and held on to win, 7-5. HOCKEY: RBC 5, FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP 1

Evan Hoey’s hat trick paced Red Bank Catholic to a home win at the Red Bank Armory Ice Complex Wednesday night. The Caseys raced to a 3-0 lead before Max Halvorsen got the Patriots on the board late in the first.  Hoey closed out the scoring with a shorthanded goal in the third period. HOCKEY: POINT CLAWS BACK TO TIE R-FH

Ryan Carr delivered a hat trick, including the final two goals of the third period, as Point Pleasant came back from a 4-2 deficit in the third to tie Rumson-Fair Haven Tuesday at the Red Bank Armory. Chase Dorworth had two goals for RFH.  Shore Sports Zone was there to bring these highlights.

HOCKEY: RFH TOPS RBR AFTER BRAWL

The Rumson-Fair Haven Bulldogs raced to a 5-2 lead at the end of one period before Red Bank Regional scored two straight in the second to get within one goal. An on-ice melee resulted in five ejections (3 from RFH, 2 from RBR). Robbie Garavente scored two goals in the third period including an empty netter to put the game away. MIDDLETOWN SOUTH BLANKS RBR ON ICE, 5-0

Middletown South held Red Bank Regional scoreless as Gavin Gulash and Ryan Lambert each scored two goals on the ice at the Red Bank Armory Saturday.

RUMSON: STANLEY CUP RUNNETH OVER HERE

van Riemsdyk 073015 4Chicago Blackhawks player Trevor van Riemsdyk, who grew up in Middletown, brought his own silverware to dinner in Rumson Thursday night: the Stanley Cup. 
 

Van Riemsdyk’s team won this year’s National Hockey League championship over theTampa Bay Ligthning. The league allows each player on the winning team to take custody of the cup for a day, and the 24-year-old defenseman used his day to show off the cup to fans across Monmouth and Ocean counties – as detailed in this video by Shore Sports Zone – before ushering it by boat across the Navesink River to a private party at the Salt Creek Grille.

Among the more than 100 wellwishers on shore was Middletown resident Michael Kessig, a friend of van Riemsdyk’s older brother, James, who plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The excitement for the family was “through the roof,” Kessig said, after shooting a selfie with the trophy, above right. “Trevor got his shot this year, and we’re hoping James can have his soon, too.”

HOCKEY: RBC EARNS SHOT AT ANOTHER TITLE

With an amazing on-his-ribs goal by Lenny Coviello and 39 stops by goalie Brandon Rozzi, Red Bank Catholic topped Middletown North, 5-3, at the Red Bank Armory on Wednesday to advance to the Shore Conference ice hockey finals. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

HOCKEY: RFH TOPS ST. ROSE, 8-6

John Monteferrante scored four goals to give Rumson-Fair Haven an 8-6 win over Saint Rose at the Red Bank Armory Monday. The Bulldogs scored three goals in the final 1:32 to put the game away. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

RFH is the 16th seed in the Shore Conference Hockey Tournament and will face number-one seed Red Bank Catholic Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Armory. Tourney matchups are here.

HOCKEY: RBC TOPS RFH ON ARMORY ICE

Red Bank Catholic raced out to a 4-0 first-period lead, but needed three goals in the third to gain an 8-5 win over Rumson-Fair Haven. The Bulldogs scored three straight goals in the second period to get within one goal, and scored early in the third to make it a 5-4 game before RBC pulled away. The Caseys’ Todd Goehring and the Bulldogs’ Brendan Ban both reached their 100th career point. Alec Mintz had a hat trick for RBC, scoring the final two goals. The Caseys improve to 12-4-2 on the season, while the Bulldogs now stand at 6-6-1. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

HOCKEY: RBC’S HOEY NOTCHES 100TH POINT

Former New Jersey Devils great Jim Dowd was back coaching Manasquan/Point Pleasant Beach at Red Bank Armory Monday, but Red Bank Catholic’s Evan Hoey had five goals and picked up his 100th career point in RBC’s 10-0 win. HOCKEY: HEROICS LIFT SJV TO TIE WITH RFF

Matt Kidney scored with 5.4 seconds left to earn Saint John Vianney of Middletown a 3-3 tie with Rumson-Fair Haven on the ice at the Red Bank Armory Monday. The RFH Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead with 3:04 to go in the third period when John Monteferrante went end to end and delivered a top-shelf backhand. But Saint John Vianney pulled the goalie in the final minute to set the stage for Kidney’s heroics, as seen here in these Shore Sports Zone video highlights.

Brendan Ban had four goals and three assists to lead Rumson-Fair Haven to an 11-3 win over Point Pleasant Beach/Manasquan at the Red Bank Armory Monday. Point Pleasant Beach/Manasquan did not have head coach Jim Dowd behind the bench in the game. News 12 New Jersey reported that the former New Jersey Devils great is facing an allegations that he kicked a player in the back during last Wednesday’s game against Red Bank Regional at Jersey Shore Sports Arena.
