RED BANK: WITH BOWS OF HOLLY
It’s like a Breakfast Burrito at Tiffany’s as British garage-rock sensation Holly Golightly makes her area debut this Saturday at the panoramic window-view stage of 10th Ave Burrito.
It’s a genuinely offbeat option for your Saturday evening’s entertainment, here in a town where the live music choices tend to run toward coverband crowd-pleasers, saloon-scene stalwarts, and the well-established household names of the top-ticket tourbus circuit.
But Brian Katz of the recently opened Red Bank branch of 10th Ave. Burrito Company has gone on record to the effect that the bar-restaurant’s music bookings will continue to be a prime distinguishing feature in the downtown’s competitive nightscape — and on October 24, the river-view stage area at 10th Ave scoops all other area clubs as it plays host to alt-rock cult favorite from across the pond, in her first local appearance.
Rest assured you won’t find the name Holly Golightly listed in any rundown of Billboard chart-toppers or serial industry award winners. But with a devoted following that dates back to her 1990s tenure in the all-grrl Brit-garage band The Headcoatees (the ladies-auxiliary unit of the lo-fi empire lorded over by the insanely prolific Billy Childish), the singer-songwriter-guitarist and musicologist who shares her name with the freewheeling heroine of Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s is poised to serve up a breakfast burrito stuffed with her signature blend of retro-rock stomp and torchy-cool blues balladeering.
Having emerged from the long and lanky shadow of Mr. Childish in the new century, Golightly’s gone on to a fairly prolific solo recording career of her own (more than two dozen albums in 20 years); guesting with acts like The White Stripes and forming Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs with longtime collaborator “Lawyer Dave” in 2007.
Exploring both her slowly simmering acoustic side and her own extensive record collection in recent seasons, Holly and company successfully bridged the chasm between garage punk and rootsy Americana (they won an award in that category at the 2010 Independent Music Awards) — making them an intriguingly ideal choice for the venue that’s booked both The Appleseed Collective and The Ribeye Brothers.
