It’s one of those unique and somewhat quirky annual local rituals that’s quietly become something of a best kept secreton the greater Red Bank Green — although, being a roomful of trombones, there’s really nothing quiet about it.

Scheduled for Labor Day evening and returning to Red Bank for its 15th annual edition, Trombone Night commandeers the sanctuary of the Salvation Army center on Newman Springs Road for a concert that assembles many of the region’s top musicians from symphony orchestras, civic brass bands and the Salvation Army’s own celebrated organizations. With a public-welcome BBQ dinner serving as appetizer, a street-corner rendition of “Bringing in the Sheaves” was never like this.

Ranging from light classical to gospel to swing, the musical menu is an eclectic affair that highlights the slide-technique skills of an all-star ensemble whose members have been drawn from the likes of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the Montclair Citadel Brass Band and the Salvation Army’s premier New York Staff Band. A voluntary collection will be taken to support the Salvation Army Red Bank Corps and Salvation Army World Services.
