RBR SUB CHARGED WITH SEX WITH STUDENT

AUTHORITIES_RB2-2014A former Red Bank Regional substitute teacher and coach was arrested and charged with having sex with an underage student at his Red Bank home, authorities said Monday night.

Darnell Lewis, 37, faces charges of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child after it was learned he engaged in intercourse with a 16-year-old girl at his home on Leighton Avenue, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said in a prepared statement.

A police report gives the address as 192 Leighton.

Lewis, who was employed at the high school as a part-time hall monitor and substitute teacher, is accused of having sex with the girl on at least three occasions between December 31, 2013 and April of this year.

Gramiccioni said Lewis “recently” resigned his job at the school, where he has also served as an assistant coach for football and basketball.

Lewis is being held in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution on $200,000 bail with no 10 percent option, as set by Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Angela White Dalton, who also set no victim contact as a condition of bail.

If convicted, Lewis faces a state prison term of up to 10 years for each of the second degree charges.

The matter was investigated by detectives from the prosecutor’s Special Victims Bureau, Red Bank Police Department and the Little Silver Police Department.
