The Shore Soccer Officials Association announced that Rumson-Fair Haven Regional HS senior Schuyler DeBree (pictured) has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the John Cobb Girls Senior Excellence Award.

Presented each year since 1993 to one female and one male soccer player from Monmouth County, the awards are based on nominations from the honorees’ coaches, and are bestowed upon students who are “proven to embody the finest qualities of a scholar/athlete including demonstrated sportsmanship, playing ability, and scholastic achievement.”

Schuyler received the award plaque at a ceremony held on Thursday, November 14 at Hemingway’s Cafe in Seaside Heights.

RFH Girls Soccer Coach and Physical Education Instructor Mary Beth Coleman, who nominated Schuyler for the award, lauded her leadership qualities and commitment to community service.

“Schuyler has been a role model from the minute she first stepped on to the soccer field for RFH,” said Coleman. “She has been an integral part of our success over the past four seasons, and I could not be more thrilled about her receiving this noteworthy award.”

A midfield starter on the girls’ varsity team since her freshman year at RFH, Schuyler has made significant contributions both on and off the soccer field.

Presently she volunteers at Special People United to Ride (SPUR) a non-profit organization that works in partnership with the Monmouth County Parks System. SPUR allows individuals with disabilities to experience the therapeutic effects associated with horseback riding.

As the first female member of Fair Haven’s Future Firefighters program, Schuyler regularly attends practice drills, responds to calls, volunteers at the yearly Fireman’s Fair, and assists with other activities taking place at the firehouse.

Schuyler is also a Junior Board Member of the Ronald McDonald House in Long Branch, which provides assistance to families with loved ones receiving treatment at nearby Monmouth Medical Center.

In addition, she serves as an assistant coach for the Lil Dawgs U12 Girls Soccer Club in Rumson and is a referee at soccer games played by local eighth grade teams.

Schuyler is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. She has also been named an AP Scholar for her outstanding college-level achievements through Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exams.

As a result of Schuyler’s achievement, RFH has the honor of hosting the John Cobb Senior Girls Excellence Award Plaque this year. The plaque lists the names of all the female soccer players who have received this award. Included among the names is that of RFH alum Colleen Rigby, who received the award in 2008 and was also nominated by Coach Coleman.

Schuyler has also been chosen to participate in the first All American Girls High School Soccer Game, slated for the weekend of December 7 through 8 in Cary, North Carolina. In the spring of her sophomore year at RFH, Schuyler verbally committed to play soccer at Duke University in Durhan, North Carolina. She will sign her letter of intent in February 2014.

Schuyler and her RFH girls’ soccer teammates enjoyed a stellar season, having captured their first NJSIAA Central Group Title since 2008 by defeating Delran High School with a score of 3-1 on Thursday, November 14 — a victory in which Schuyler contributed two goals, one late in the first half and the other early in the second half.

But soccer was not foremost on the players’ minds during a road trip on November 8. Altruism was the thought for the day as they visited the Habitat for Humanity Warehouse in Long Branch, New Jersey.

There they spent two hours organizing supplies collected through Hurricane Sandy Relief efforts. The girls’ task was to make the process of selecting items easier for area residents looking to rebuild and restore their homes.

“I am so proud of my players for dedicating their time and effort to this project,” said Coach Coleman. “This group works just as hard to assist others as they do when they are on the soccer field.”

In addition to Schuyler DeBree, the 2013 RFH girls’ varsity soccer players are Allie Cuje, Janie DeVito, Anna Finn, Caitlin Griffith, Kaitlyn Hess, Meagan McGurl, Lindsay McKean, Olivia Rosenberg, Michaela Borneo, Lindsey Corydon, Allie Geiger, Emma Gill, Caroline Kostecky, Jacqueline Littleson, Morgan Mulligan, Samantha Beaudreault, Catie Clark, Grace Forsyth, and Hanna LoSavio. Assistant Coaches are Donna Dini and Jeff Herkimer.
