A volunteer Little Silver firefighter suffered a minor injury while combating a smoky basement fire on Conover Place Monday afternoon, the Asbury Park Press reports.

The unidentified firefighter, one of more than 50 from four towns who responded to the 4:30 p.m. alarm, was treated on the scene for a leg injury, Fire Chief Andrew Smith told the Press.

From a press release Smith posted on the Little Silver Fire Company Facebook page about the incident, at 10 Conover Lane:

Police units arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the rear of the building. The fire was upgraded to a structure fire response adding a firefighter rescue team (RIT) to the assignment.

Little Silver Firefighters along with Shrewsbury arrived on location and initiated an aggressive interior attack holding the fire to the main origin. The fire was found in the basement, extinguished, and searches were conducted. The building was not occupied at the time of the fire.

The fire is under investigation by the Red Bank Fire Marshall’s office and Little Silver Police. One firefighter received minor injuries and were treated and released on the scene.

Units from Little Silver Fire and EMS, Shrewsbury FD, Sea Bright FD, and Rumson FD responded to the incident.

Smith told the Press reported the building was used as office and storage space for a landscaping company, and that the fire was not considered suspicious.
