THANK-YOU LETTER GOOFS MURPHY’S TENURE

art-murphy-110309Art Murphy with well-wishers moments after he won his third full term earlier this month.

Did Art Murphy forget how long he’s been on the Red Bank borough council?

In a letter to the editor published in this week’s edition of the Hub, the Democrat and his running mate in this month’s election, Councilman Mike DuPont, express their gratitude “as we begin our second terms.”

Oops.

DuPont is just about to begin his second term. But Murphy’s been on the council since late 2003, when he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Betti Thompson, who resigned to moved to Florida. At the time, Murphy was already a candidate for council, and won a seat outright two months later. He was re-elected in 2006 and again earlier this month, so he’ll start his third full term on January 1.

Murphy could not be reached for comment Friday morning.

It’s not the first time Murphy’s time on the council has been botched. A flyer from his 2006 re-election campaign described him as a member of the governing body since 2002.

It’s also not the only goof in the Hub letter. In the online version, DuPont and Murphy pledge to “preserve the quality of life that we have had the goof fortune to enjoy in Red Bank.”
