One man is dead and another injured after the in a car in which they were traveling struck a utility pole and flipped onto its roof in Middletown last night, according to two reports.

The Star-Ledger says the unidentified dead man was in his early 20s and from Monmouth County. He had been a passenger in the car when the driver lost control shortly before 9p.

The passenger was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, the Sledger says.

The car was traveling south on the highway near Twin Brooks Avenue shortly before 9 p.m. when the driver lost control of it, Lt. Craig Bahrs said. The car struck a utility pole, flipped and landed on its roof. No other vehicles were involved.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation, and police were trying to determine if speeding may have contributed to it, the lieutenant said.

Both southbound lanes were closed for three hours, and traffic was rerouted. The lanes reopened around midnight.

The Asbury Park Press identified the location as near Kohl’s plaza.
