When Long John Hunter wants to go canoeing, his owner, Susan Fick, takes him canoeing.

redbankgreen spotted Fick and Hunter — a Great Dane and therapy dog at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune — during what Hunter surely must have thought were endless preparations Sunday as they got ready to cruise the Navesink River from the beach at Navesink River Rowing.

A short while later, we happened on them again as they arrived at the marina in Marine Park, just behind the stage at the Red Bank Jazz & Blues Festival (bottom photo).

Hunter’s been out on the river before, and has never had any qualms about it, Fick tells us.

“There was no training involved,” she says. “He took to the river like he owned it.”
